After numerous delays and a cancellation due to the global pandemic, the Back to the Future: The Musical’ is set to begin preview performances from 14 May, 2021 in London’s West End.

It seems like Doc popped up in 2020 and decided he didn’t want to stick around.

The musical is based on the first movie of the 80s trilogy ‘Back to the Future‘ which became an international phenomenon.

The story follows high school kid Marty McFly who accidentally goes back to his parents’ past in a time travelling DeLorean built by his best friend, eccentric scientist Doc Brown.

Check out the trailer for the new musical below:

Christopher Lloyd, the original Doc Brown, played a central part in the promotion of the production as he featured in the trailer. He is ‘excited to finally see it for himself’ next year. “And, Great Scott — I can’t wait to hear Doc Brown sing!” he was quoted saying in the announcement of the return of the musical.

He will have a pretty authentic experience as to what the original 2020 production was like since the same cast as the Manchester world premiere is set to return.

Tony Award winner Roger Bart will return as Doc Brown and Olly Dobson will star as Marty McFly.

The movie’s creators Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis have adapted the iconic story for stage and they’ve included original music by multi-Grammy winners, as well as well-known beloved songs from the movie.

The musical was originally intended to make its world premiere in 2015, the year to which Marty and Doc traveled in the second movie. Due to various issues, it was pushed back to February 2020 but on 16 March all remaining performances were cancelled after the Manchester Opera House closed due to the pandemic.

Now the show will officially arrive at London’s Adelphi Theatre on 14 May, 2021 and will run until 26 September, 2021.

According to producer Colin Ingram during the first run of the show, one audience member said: “This is the new standard of spectacle, I feel like people are going to be talking about this for a long time.”
